A.J. is my dog. One of the things I did while on an extended break from my career as a technical writer and editor was adopt this totally crazy and adorable dog. He's provided me with an incredible amount of frustration and entertainment. And as you can see, he's also provided me with a large amount of writing material. I'm back at work now, but plan to keep the stories coming - maybe just not as often.

A.J. Gets a Cone of Shame

On July 4, 2015July 28, 2015 By ajthespringer

August 24, 2013 A.J. got a cone of shame a couple of days ago. His foot started to heal nicely, but I couldn’t keep him from scratching his face. I had a horrible day that day. I went to do some volunteer work at a local organization, but it turned out to be a very frustrating, …

A.J. Goes Back to the Vet

On July 4, 2015July 28, 2015 By ajthespringer

August 19, 2013 Today we start A.J.’s third round of antibiotics since we adopted him three and a half weeks ago. Today we went to the vet again because he needed his parvo booster, plus his cheatgrass abscess wasn’t healing up very well. We saw Dr. Frost, the same vet we saw last time. He …

A.J.’s First Private Lesson

On July 3, 2015July 28, 2015 By ajthespringer

August 16, 2013 We had another lesson in getting up too early in the morning today. Greg got up just before 6:30 to let A.J. out. A.J. came back in and was wide awake. I petted him for a little bit, but he got right up again. A few minutes later he was at the door …

A.J. Growls for Attention

On July 3, 2015July 28, 2015 By ajthespringer

August 15, 2013 A.J. barfed up his entire breakfast again this morning. Today A.J. growled at me. I had been gone for several hours that morning, so he was a little amped up to see me when I got home. Instead of immediately going and playing with A.J. I went into Greg's office to talk to …

The Case of the Missing Sock

On July 2, 2015July 28, 2015 By ajthespringer

August 14, 2013 Sorry guys, but men really can be clueless sometimes. I put a sock on A.J.’s paw to cover up his cheatgrass wound before leaving for my volunteer work so he wouldn’t lick at it all day. Greg and I rode our bikes to town, then Greg came home to work while I worked …

Our First Thunderstorm

On July 2, 2015July 28, 2015 By ajthespringer

August 13, 2013 We had a little bit of a thunderstorm around 3 AM. A.J. did great. He woke me up, but I got up, petted him for a few minutes, went back to bed and we all slept through the rest of the storm. He insisted on getting up at 6:30 again. I was …

Another Terrible Walk

On July 1, 2015July 28, 2015 By ajthespringer

August 12, 2013 We’re still dealing with A.J.’s open wound from the cheatgrass. Cleaning it out and getting the sock on have been quite the challenge. He mouthed at me several times while I tried to put the sock on. The last couple of times he’s pretty much given up, finally. We had a terrible …

A.J. Meets Cheatgrass

On June 30, 2015July 28, 2015 By ajthespringer

August 10, 2013 Poor A.J., he’s had a rough couple of days. Yesterday was his first trip to the groomer. The first groomer I called never called back, so I chose this particular groomer in part because they’re nearby, but also because according to their website the owner had a dog who did therapy dog work and I …

A.J. Progress

On June 29, 2015July 28, 2015 By ajthespringer

August 7, 2013 I noticed yesterday that A.J. has a little heart-shaped spot on his front paw. A.J. is doing really well in the house. He was home alone for about an hour in the morning, then for about three hours in the afternoon, and nothing was destroyed. And tonight I left the bedroom door …

Behavior Issues

On June 26, 2015July 28, 2015 By ajthespringer

August 5, 2013 We’re well into week 2 of A.J. He’s actually coming along pretty well. We left him yesterday for 2 hours and he tore apart a Kleenex box and knocked over a plastic cup of water that was on the kitchen table. Not great, but not bad. Today we left him for 2 …
